Tuneo Browser Extension

Tuneo is a Chrome extension that identifies songs playing in browser tabs using audio fingerprinting. This privacy policy explains what data the extension collects, how it is used, and your rights.

Data Collected

Tuneo collects the following data:

  • Short audio clips (~8 seconds) from the active browser tab, used solely for song identification.
  • Match history: song titles, artists, album names, and timestamps of when songs were identified.

Tuneo does not collect:

  • Personal identifiers such as your name, email address, or IP address.
  • Page URLs, browsing history, or page content.
  • Keystrokes, mouse movements, or form inputs.
  • Any data when the extension is not actively identifying a song.

How Data Is Used

  • Audio clips are sent to the AudD API for music recognition. They are not stored by Tuneo.
  • Match history is stored locally in chrome.storage.local on your device and never leaves your machine.
  • No data is sent to any server other than the AudD recognition API for the sole purpose of identifying a song.

Third-Party Services

Tuneo uses the AudD music recognition API to identify songs. When you tap the listen button, an 8-second audio clip is sent to AudD for analysis. AudD's use of this data is governed by their own privacy policy.

Data Storage

Match history is stored entirely on your device using Chrome's local storage API. You can view, export, or clear this data at any time from the side panel. Uninstalling the extension removes all locally stored data.

Permissions

Tuneo requests the following Chrome permissions:

  • tabCapture — to capture audio from the active tab for recognition.
  • offscreen — to run audio capture in a hidden document (MV3 requirement).
  • storage — to persist match history locally.
  • sidePanel — to display match history in the side panel.
  • activeTab — to access the currently active tab for capture.
  • identity — to display your Chrome profile name.
  • scripting — to show in-page toast notifications after recognition.

These permissions are used solely for song identification and displaying results.

Data Retention

Match history is retained locally (up to 25 entries) until you clear it or uninstall the extension. Audio clips are not stored beyond the recognition request.

Your Rights

You can:

  • View your match history in the popup or side panel at any time.
  • Export your history as CSV or copy it as text.
  • Clear all locally stored history from the side panel.
  • Uninstall the extension to remove all data.

Changes to This Policy

If this policy changes, the “Last updated” date at the top will be revised.
